Social expectations vs Originality

The plight of being unique in a trend pressured world. | Jemma Richmond

coming out of a school environment especially, it can be difficult to establish yo

ur own look when everything you wear was dictated to you by peer pressure and societal conventions. “Don’t wear that because…” [insert: too short, too girly, too gay, or too not-what-fits-in as]”. When it comes to fashion of the everyday student it can be a rather scary world. I know you probably all think you are artistic and unique and you’re allowed to think so but the truth is that fashion is hard. Following what’s vomited out to you on tweeny-type cotton-on and so forth mannequins is a hell of a lot easier then developing your own aesthetic from scratch. Especially since not all of us were blessed with the instantaneous feel for style (me included). It also requires bravery. Bravery to stand out, and bravery to fail. But once you take that step, really take it – as in not the mainstream hipster stuff - it sets you free. You can no longer be held back because you can’t step back. And sure trends are cool some times and wear them with pleasure but do it on your own terms. Add it to you style but don’t make it your style. The truth is that most people will respect you for it (or not care) and if anyone thinks otherwise they really aren’t worth your time. So whether it be oversized coats, printed Ts or vintage dresses wear it with pride and be yourself because that’s the best kind of style there is.
